Waupaca Warriors season ends at the hands of Kaukauna

NEW LONDON- The Waupaca Warriors advanced to the semi-finals of the regional AA tournament that took place July 23-26 at Hatten Park, but had trouble in their matchups with Kaukauna.

July 23

Waupaca 1

In the opening round of the tournament, the Kaukauna Angels took an early lead when they scored on a bases-loaded balk, making it 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

In the second inning, Kaukauna scored to make it 2-0 on an RBI groundout.
Waupaca cut into the lead as Jacob Durrant lined to left field to make it a 2-1 deficit.

Kaukauna regained the two-run lead with an RBI single that made it a 3-1 game in the third inning.

In the fourth inning, the Angels kept the pressure going with a two-RBI single and a sacrifice fly that made the score 6-1.

Kaukauna got an 8-1 advantage with a two-run RBI single in the fifth inning, and scored three more runs with a two-run RBI double followed by an RBI single that made the final score 11-1.

July 24

Waupaca 7,
Freedom 4

In the opening inning of play on the second day of the regional tournament, where it was win or go home, Freedom took the early lead with a two-run RBI double to left field that put them up 2-0. A pop out to center field drove in a runner on a pop fly, and an RBI single made the score 4-0.

In the top of the second inning, Max Olson singled on a pop fly to center field to generate offense for the Warriors and cut into the Freedom lead as they made the deficit 4-1.

Jay Card singled on a ground ball in the third inning that brought in a run, and Doug Williams hit an RBI double for Waupaca that brought the Freedom lead to 4-3.

Card grounded out to second base to bring in the tying run in the fourth inning as Waupaca made the score 4-4.

Erik Harms singled on a fly ball to make the score 5- 4, giving the Warriors a lead in the fifth inning as he drove in a run to go ahead 5-4.

Olson made it a 6-4 ball game with an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning, and a bases-loaded walk made the score 7-4.

Waupaca got the final three outs it needed in the bottom of the seventh to advance to the semi-finals.

July 25

Waupaca 2

In a rematch where the winner would advance to the championship, the Kaukauna Angels took the early lead with an RBI single on a fly ball to right field that made the score 1-0.

The Angels went up 5-0 with an RBI single to right field, back-to-back bases loaded walks, and a sacrifice fly.

Card cut into the Angels’ lead as he hit a two-run RBI that made the deficit 5-2.

Kaukauna extended their lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning that drove in a run and an RBI double in the sixth inning that made it a 7-2 game in Kaukauna’s favor.

Two strikeouts and a pop out in the bottom of the seventh inning were all that the Warriors could muster as they were eliminated from the regional tournament.
