Dec. 2, 2017.

That’s the last time the Waupaca girls’ basketball team walked off the court with a win under its belt.

The Comets ended a 29-game skid Jan. 3 with a 58-51 North Eastern Conference win over Denmark at Waupaca High School.

The lead changed hands five times before the Comets ended the first half with a 9-4 run to take a 27-19 lead at the break. Seattle Lettau connected on a pair of three-pointers during the run, while another from Brenna Barlow gave the Comets their biggest lead at 27-17.

Kalyn Klug’s steal and layup gave Waupaca a 41-30 lead midway through the second half, but the Vikings eventually cut the lead to five points on a Sophie Kinjerski basket.

Waupaca responded with an 8-3 run to go up 51-41, but Denmark scored the next eight points to cut the Comets’ lead to 51-49 with just under two minutes to go.

Lexi Penovich’s free throw cut Waupaca’s lead to 53-51 with 56 seconds remaining, but the Vikings never got any closer, as the Comets scored the game’s final five points.

Lettau led four Waupaca players in double figures with a game-high 17 points, while Klug added 15 and Barlow and Savannah Wehmeyer chipped in with 10 each.

Abigail O’Brien and Jessica Heraly led Denmark with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Waupaca improved to 1-10 overall and 1-7 in conference play, while Denmark fell to 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

The Comets will head to Luxemburg Thursday, Jan. 10, for a matchup with Luxemburg-Casco before opening the second half of North Eastern play Tuesday, Jan. 15, at home against Oconto Falls. Tipoff for both games is set for 7 p.m.
