Sam Wegener has only suited up for two games, but the senior has already left his mark on the Clintonville football team this season.
He opened the season Aug. 23 with eight catches for 77 yards in a 46-6 loss to Marinette to become the program’s all-time leading receiver and followed that up with a 10-catch, four-touchdown effort Aug. 30 in a 43-20 win over Ripon.
Wegener scored on passes of 65 and 17 yards in the second quarter and 18 and 17 yards in the second half as the Truckers wrapped up their nonconference schedule.
Linken Korth capped the Truckers’ opening drive with a 1-yard run and Zach Johnson connected with Wegener for a 65-yard score that gave the home team a 15-0 lead.
Ripon answered with Nathan Hanson’s 5-yard pass to Traxtyn Pick, but Johnson and Wegener hooked up for a 17-yard pass that gave the Truckers a 22-8 lead at the break.
Wegener’s third touchdown catch, an 18-yarder, gave Clintonville a 29-8 lead in the third quarter, but Ripon’s Declan Dudzinski returned the kickoff 92 yards to make it a two-score game.
The Tigers never got any closer, as Korth added a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Johnson wrapped up the scoring for the Truckers in the fourth quarter with an 11-yard pass to Wegener.
Hanson found Dudzinski for a 28-yard scoring pass to complete the scoring.
Clintonville outgained the Tigers 313-173. Korth led the Truckers with 90 rushing yards and Johnson completed 14 of 20 passes for 191 yards. Ripon’s Parker Stellmacher led all rushers with 138 yards, but the Truckers held the Tigers to 70 passing yards.
The Truckers will wrap up a two-game home stand Friday, Sept. 6, by hosting Shiocton in the Northwoods Conference opener for both teams.
