The 100-year commemoration of the World War I Armistice was the topic of a recent program in Weyauwega.
The Weyauwega Area Historical Society presented the free program on Nov. 9.
The armistice between Germany and the Allies was signed on Nov. 11, 1918, making it the first step to end the war.
Members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post were on hand for Weyauwega’s program, as well as Weyauwega-Fremont High School history students and band students.
Several patriotic selections were played before the program began, with Ryan Ames beginning the program by playing “The Star Spangled Banner” and concluding it by sounding “Taps” on his flugelhorn.
Marietta Paap, with assistance from Judi Rehm, gave a presentation about what life as a soldier was like in World War I.
That was followed by an explanation of the artifacts on display from historian Kim Heltemes.
He was joined by local veterans, Leon Maierhafer and Lee Wilhelm, in sharing stories they heard years ago from World War I veterans.
The historical society extends its appreciation to those who volunteered for the program.
