Wolves get the win in rematch with Amherst

Posted

Amherst’s boys’ basketball team opened Central Wisconsin Conference-East play almost two months ago with a 46-39 home win over Manawa.

The rematch in Manawa had a much different result, as the Wolves hosted the Falcons on Jan. 24 and handed them a 48-31 defeat.

Both teams came into the game with one CWC-East win each and a 5-9 overall record.

The lead changed hands three times in the opening minutes before Logan Zirbel’s three-pointer gave the Wolves a 7-5 lead. Manawa never trailed after that.

Manawa took a 21-12 lead into the locker room at halftime and scored the first eight points of the second half to take its largest lead, 29-12.

However, the Falcons answered with a 10-0 run that cut the lead to seven points with 10 minutes remaining.

Amherst never got any closer, and the Wolves built a double-digit lead and never gave it up.

Brayden Zielke and Reed Schlueter led Manawa with 11 points each, while Sully Perkins led Amherst with 10.
