Manawa picked up a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference volleyball win Sept. 15 by taking three of four matches at Iola-Scandinavia.
The Wolves opened the match with a 25-18 win, but the host Thunderbirds took the next set, 25-19. However, Manawa regrouped and sealed the victory with 25-21 and 25-20 wins.
“This was a game we really needed to win just to get some confidence in our girls,” I-S coach Teresa Kielblock said. “They’ve been playing some matches pretty well and coming up short.”
Elise Erdmann led the T-Birds with 13 service points, while Karena Finch added seven points and Kendall Johnson finished with a team-high 20 assists. Payton Wester and Mackenzie Kielblock added eight and seven kills, respectively.
“Our hitting wasn’t what I’ve seen these girls do,” Kielblock said. “They aren’t showing their real potential. Our serving has gotten better with Elise and Kendall stepping it on service. We just have to keep working on our passes and making good use of the ball every time we have it.”
I-S also dropped a CWC-8 meet Sept. 13 to Amherst, 25-12, 25-17, 25-16.
Johnson led the T-Birds with eight blocks and Wester added five service points, including a pair of aces.
“It was a tough match with Amherst capitalizing on their serving,” Kielblock said. “We are still working on ironing out all the wrinkles within our team. We need to get back to the basics and really work on the fundamentals of the game and keep the positivity going when we do something good.”
