WWII submarine film at library

Posted

Movie stars Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster

“Run Silent Run Deep” will be shown at the Waupaca Area Public Library at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, as part of the First Thursday Film Series.

This 1958 World War II submarine picture will be presented in honor of all veterans of the United States military services, according to Dr. Jack Rhodes, who will introduce the movie.

“Run Silent Run Deep,” Rhodes said, is a taut underwater adventure that builds upon a conflict of wills between a Navy captain (Clark Gable) and his executive officer (Burt Lancaster) during a dangerous assignment in the Pacific Ocean. The film is primarily set in 1943, at the height of military combat on the Japanese front.

The screenplay was written by John Gay from a 1955 novel by Commander Edward L. Beach, Jr. Robert Wise, later to win an Oscar for directing “The Sound of Music,” directs the movie with a sure hand and at a brisk pace.

Others in the cast include Jack Warden, Brad Dexter, Rudy Bond, and Mary La Roche. Don Rickles, who would later achieve fame on television as a stand-up comedian and “Master of the Put-Downs,” makes his film debut in a more-or-less serious role.

The screening is free and open to the public. Complimentary popcorn, sodas, and theater treats will be served.
