Velimer “Val” Yakich, age 98 of Waupaca passed away Wednesday August 23, 2023.
Val was one of five sons born to the late John and Clara (Hefty) Yakich on January 26, 1925 in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He joined the Navy in January 1943 and served as a Torpedo Man and MP in World War II. He returned to South Milwaukee, in 1946 where he married his High School sweetheart, Esther Gaworski on August 14, 1948. Val worked as an Electrician and together he and Esther raised a family of four. He moved into management and studied nights to earn his Bachelor’s degree. Over the years he worked as a Plant Manager for several companies, relocating to Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Illinois, Georgia, and Texas where he retired. In retirement AARP recognized him for his 25+ years as a volunteer tax preparer. On March 24, 2011 the love of his life, Esther, passed away while living in Waco, Texas. Later that year, Val moved to Waupaca, Wisconsin to be closer to family. He bought a house, maintained the grounds, and lived independently until his passing. He took incredible pride in his yard. He was an avid sports enthusiast and bowler. He was especially passionate about Baylor, Marquette, Badgers, Brewers, and the Packers.
Val is survived by his brother George, children William (Linda), Pamela, and Mark. Grandchildren Mike (Crystal), Kimberly, Chris, EJ, Jordan, Joseph, and Coltan, Great Grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Val was preceded in death by his parents John and Clara Yakich; his wife Esther Yakich of 63 years; his son Terrence Yakich and brothers Walter, Paul and Donald.
A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday September 6, 2023 from 12 P.M. until 2 P.M. at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca. Military Honors will be held right after the gathering at 2 P.M. at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca.
