Zielke has hand in eight TDs

Warhawks now 5-0 on season

Weyauwega-Fremont, Iola-Scandinavia and Hortonville’s football teams picked up wins Sept. 15, while Manawa, New London, Waupaca and Clintonville came up short.

Weyauwega-Fremont 55, Spencer/Columbus Catholic 14

Kameron Zielke opened the scoring for the Warhawks with 15- and 1-yard runs in the first quarter before throwing touchdown passes of 22 and 6 yards to Hunter Meisenhelder and 39 yards to Brayden Arndt in the second quarter.

Austyn Widmann returned a fumble 55 yards for the Rockets’ only touchdown of the first half and the Warhawks led 35-6 at the break.

Zielke’s big night continued in the third quarter with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Broc Billington, a 50-yard punt return and a 95-yard kickoff return after the Rockets had scored on Logan Ehlert’s 20-yard run.

Zielke completed 14 of 19 pases for 247 yards and led the Warhawks with 78 of the team’s 109 rushing yards.

Arndt caught five passes for a team-high 94 yards, Meisenhelder had four catches for 82 yards and Billington caught two for 63 yards.

Nekoosa 36, Manawa 17

After opening the season with a road win, it’s been all downhill for the Wolves, as they fell to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in CWC-Large play with a home loss to the Papermakers.

Manawa scored all 17 of its points in the first quarter. Charles Wentworth returned a punt 11 yards for the first score before Dakota Stroud kicked a 33-yard field goal and threw a 42-yard scoring pass to Thomas Bartelt.

The Papermakers answered with two touchdowns in the second quarter, two more in the third and one in the fourth.

Nekoosa held the Wolves to 143 yards of offense, including only 43 on the ground. Bartelt caught four of Stroud’s passes for 63 yards.

Abbotsford's Evan Reis of Abbotsford can't keep Iola-Scandinavia quarterback Jensen Rice from picking up a first down. Rice scored twice on a pair of 10-yard runs Sept. 8 in Scandiinavia, but the Thunderbirds dropped a 34-12 decision to the Falcons.

Iola-Scandinavia 48, Assumption 14

Jensen Rice had his biggest game in his first season as the Iola-Scandinavia football team’s quarterback, as he ran for four touchdowns and threw for another score in the Thunderbirds’ 48-14 Central Wisconsin Conference-Small win over Assumption.

All five scores came in the first half.

The sophomore scored on runs of 54, 22 and 72 yards in the first quarter and added a 1-yard scoring pass to Korz Loken and a 1-yard run in the second quarter to give the T-Birds a 37-0 halftime lead.

Braxten Steinert cut the lead to 37-8 with a 3-yard run in the third quarter, but the T-Birds answered with Billy Myers’ 4-yard run.

Assumption wrapped up the scoring in the fourth quarter with Manny Schultz’s touchdown run.

Rice rushed for a game-high 188 yards on 15 carries and completed three of his four passes to Loken for 78 yards.

Hortonville 27, Wisconsin Rapids 14

Hortonville picked up its second Valley Football Association win in a row with a 27-14 victory over Wisconsin Rapids.

The Polar Bears took a 20-0 halftime lead after scoring once in the first quarter and twice in the second.

Levi Strange found the end zone from a yard out in the first quarter and Broden Butzin added touchdown passes of 29 yards to Gavin Vallner and 64 yards to Colin Wendt before halftime.

Butzin’s third touchdown pass of the game, a 22-yarder to Levi Hebbe, gave the Polar Bears a 27-0 lead in the third quarter.
Wisconsin Rapids avoided the shutout with Cohen Lehmann’s 35-yard run and Jonah Rasmussen’s 35-yard pass to Jackson Laskowski.

Butzin completed 10 of 18 passes for 210 yards, including three completions to Wendt for 113 yards. Strange led the Polar Bears with 63 of the team’s 93 rushing yards.

Winneconne 39, New London 6

Tommy Fields carried the ball 38 times for the Bulldogs for a game-high 177 yards, but the Wolves kept the home team out of the end zone until late in the contest.

Both teams had three-and-outs on their opening drives, but Winneconne scored touchdowns on five of its next six drives to take a 32-0 halftime lead.

The Wolves had two opportunities to score on their second drive. A penalty negated Brody Schaffer’s punt return for a score and Jack Quigley fumbled the ball on his way to the end zone after hauling in a pass from Brady Immel.

Winneconne opened the scoring on its third drive with Dylan Sharratt’s 57-yard run.

The Wolves added four more scores in the second quarter on Ethan Mathe’s 6-yard run, Schaffer’s 78-yard punt return, Immel’s 12-yard pass to Quigley and Mathe’s 10-yard run.

A running clock began in the third quarter on Schaffer’s 60-yard punt return that turned out to be the Wolves’ final score.
New London’s touchdown came with just under two minutes remaining in the game on Fields’ 2-yard run. The score came after the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs at the Winneconne 1-yard line on their previous drive.

Tyler Gerrits completed four of six passes for New London, with two of them going to Hunter Beebe for 34 yards.

The Wolves outgained the Bulldogs 162-75 through the air, but New London had a 183-73 advantage on the ground.

Shawano 36, Waupaca 27

The Comets didn’t have an answer for Shawano’s Jerzy Brocker, as the Hawks’ quarterback ran for 201 yards and four touchdowns.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Hawks led 16-14 at halftime. Both teams scored a touchdown in the third quarter before Shawano outscored the Comets 14-6 in the fourth quarter.

Xzaver Pittman led Waupaca with 117 rushing yards. Ethan Harms completed 15 of 22 passes for 138 yards. Pittman, Harms and Andre Hendrix ran for a touchdown, while Harms threw a scoring pass to Austin Adamczak.

Wautoma 39, Clintonville 6

A night to remember for the Wautoma football team also turned out to be one to forget for Clintonville.

The Truckers faced Wautoma in a nonconference game and ended up on the short end of a 39-6 score.

Wautoma scored 21 points in the first quarter, led 27-0 at halftime and added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Clintonville’s only points came in the third quarter on Kade Rosenow’s 64-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Wegener.

Joe Ascher found the end zone three times in the first quarter for the Hornets on a 68-yard run and passes of 57 and 46 yards from Carson Armstrong.

Wautoma added to its lead in the second quarter on Armstrong’s 14-yard pass to Landon Kalata before adding touchdown runs of 13 yards from Skyler Royston and 5 yards from D.J. Malnory.

The Hornets held the Truckers to 25 rushing yards on 23 carries. Rosenow completed 10 of 24 passes for 151 yards.

Wautoma outgained Clintonville 480-204. Royston had 120 of the Hornets’ 322 rushing yards, while Hunter Helf and Ascher added 88 and 73, respectively. Ascher also caught three passes for 115 yards.

Wegener finished with four catches for 86 yards.
