Hazen, Edith Mae

Edith Mae Hazen, daughter of Clara and Henry Haas (Racine, WI), passed away on Friday, 7/23/2010, and just days after celebrating her 95th birthday with her family. She was a wonderful mother instilling a strong sense of responsibility, generosity to others and the importance of volunteerism. During WWII, she trained troops as a civilian radio school teacher where she met her husband, Howard Hazen. They married on Dec. 2, 1944 in Laredo, Texas. All her life, Edith enjoyed travel and new experiences often sharing stories of Chicago, The Berkshires and Miami. Edith had a special eye for fashion and design. Her love of cribbage kept her sharp and frequently amused at her ability to win games against her children and grand-children right up until the end. Edith is the mother of Brian Hazen (Brigid), Marcia Hazen, Pat Wirtz (Mark) and Robert Hazen (Diane). Edith had seven grandchildren, Chris, Howie and Stacey (children of Harold), Doug (Lindsey) and Steve (children of Robert & Diane), Will and Alexandra (children of Brian & Brigid) and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her 9 siblings, husband, Howard, her son, Harold and her son-in-law, Mark Wirtz. In honor of her generous spirit and in lieu of flowers or donations, please consider doing a kind act for a stranger today. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church (N2845 Shadow Road, Waupaca, WI) on Friday, July 30th. The family will gather for visitation before Mass at 10:30. There will be no showing as our mother donated her body to the University of Wisconsin Medical School for educational and scientific pursuits. Everyone is invited to a celebration immediately following at T.W. Martin’s Public House (111 Cooper St, Waupaca).

We are thankful for the wonderful care that our mother received at Bethany Pine’s Assisted Living and Bethany Homes in her last years. We will miss her very much.
