Wadleigh, Virgil J.

Virgil J. Wadleigh, age 76, of Clintonville, passed away Friday morning, October 1, 2010, at the St. Joseph Residence in New London. Virgil was born on November 26, 1933, in Beaver Dam, WI, as the son of the late Burton and Marie (Slovitcz) Wadleigh. He graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1951 and attended UW-Eau Claire, UW-Madison, and the University of Minnesota. Virgil began his teach

ing career in 1956 in Greenwood and later taught in Colfax. It was also at this time that he served his country in the United States Army from August of 1956 through June of 1958. Upon his discharge from service, Virgil continued in his educational career as an administrator for the Winneconne School District and later the Clintonville School District. It was while he was a principal at Winneconne that he met Sandee Zingler. The couple then married at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Oshkosh on June 11, 1966. The couple has now resided in Clintonville since 1970 where Virgil retired as School Superintendent. He was a manager for the Clintonville Housing Authority for 3 years, a member of the Clintonville Rotary Club, served as a member of the City Council, Red Cross, Park & Recreation Board, United Way, Library Board, Imago Dei Board, and served as president of the Clintonville Hospital Board. As a member of the Christus Lutheran Church in Clintonville, he was also active on the Church Council, and served as Catechist, Usher, Superintendent for Sunday School, and Coordinator for Vacation Bible School. Virgil was also a proud member of Masonic Lodge 32nd Degree where he served as Most Wise Master. Many area residents will remember him for his “clowning around” as he enjoyed dressing up as a clown for local parades and activities. Obviously Virgil was a dedicated member of his church and community, but he was also a dedicated husband and father and enjoyed any time spent with family and friends. Survivors include: His Wife: Sandee. His Daughter: Sarah (Tom) Heideman, Theresa. Also his Sister: Beverley Schuster, Beaver Dam. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Eugene, and a sister, Virginia Wadleigh. Funeral services were held Monday October 4, 2010 at 11 AM at the Christus Lutheran Church in Clintonville with the Rev. Brian Crocker officiating. Inurnment was in Lakeview Memorial Park in Oshkosh. Masonic services were held at the church prior to the service, and Military Honor Rites were conducted following the service by members of VFW Post #664 and American Legion Post #63 of Clintonville. Friends called at the church on Monday from 9:30 AM until the time of the services. The Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home & Crematory of Clintonville is assisting his family.
