A new book club in Waupaca will launch with a discussion of Matt Taibbi’s controversial account of the 2008 financial crisis that caused the recession.
The club will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in the Snug at T.W. Martin’s Irish Pub, 111 Cooper St., to discuss the book Griftopia: Bubble Machines, Vampire Squids, and the Long Con That Is Breaking America.
Taibbi, a reporter for Rolling Stone magazine, wrote a series of articles on how the Wall Street elite have hijacked America’s economic and political life. He detailed how bankers and speculators manipulated Washington politics to escape regulation of their risky financial schemes, then managed to grab a multi-billion dollar bailout when those schemes failed catastrophically.
Griftopia is an expansion of Taibbi’s investigative journalism for the Rolling Stone. His writing style is scathing, blunt, humorous and sometimes profane.
