Wild Rose spoils Thunderbirds’ opener

Wild Rose scored 35 unanswered points in a 42-7 nonconference football win over Iola-Scandinavia Friday, Aug. 19, at Thunderbird Field.

Matt Paeth opened the scoring for the visiting Wildcats with a 5-yard run in the first quarter. Ronnie Knapstein answered for the T-Birds from 3 yards out, but Andrew Bauer’s extra point that tied the game at 7-7 turned out to be the team’s final points.

The Wildcats quickly gained the lead back, as Alex Dix returned the kickoff 80 yards.

Wild Rose added two scores in the second and fourth quarters. Paeth found the end zone from 20 yards out in the second and later scored on a 5-yard run to give the Wildcats a 28-7 halftime lead.

Paeth and Kyle Schmidt added 1-yard runs in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

The Wildcats had a 319-102 advantage in rushing yards and outgained the T-Birds through the air 50-21.

Quarterback Darren Hudziak led the Wildcats’ rushing game with 109 yards in 17 carries, while Brady Huettner averaged nearly nine yards a carry for the T-Birds with 88 yards in 10 carries.

Spencer Erickson had a tough night throwing the ball for I-S, as he completed three of 10 passes and threw four interceptions.

The T-Birds will play at Rosholt 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, before opening Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play the following Friday against Weyauwega-Fremont..
