Waupaca girls drop first two conference games

WAUPACA – The season is only four games old and so far, the Eastern Valley Conference has not been very kind to the Waupaca girls’ basketball team.

Waupaca is now 0-2 in the EVC after a 62-34 loss to Little Chute Nov. 26. The Comets also opened conference play Nov. 20 with a 64-32 loss to Appleton Xavier before splitting a pair of games at the Cranberry Classic in Wisconsin Rapids.

LITTLE CHUTE – The host Mustangs held the Comets to three points in the first quarter and five over the final eight minutes.

Little Chute led 12-3 after one quarter, 32-18 at halftime and added to its lead with a 21-11 advantage in the third quarter.

Emily Williams led Waupaca with nine points.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Mary Sigler scored 22 points Nov. 24 to lead Wisconsin Rapids Assumption over the Comets.

The Royals held Waupaca to six or fewer points in three quarters.

Morgan Smith led Waupaca with seven points.

Waupaca 46,

Pittsville 28

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Williams scored 10 points and Mikaila Johnson and Courtney Schmidt added nine each as Waupaca picked up its first win of the season over the Panthers Nov. 23.

Waupaca led 7-4 after one quarter and 13-6 at halftime before outscoring Pittsville 20-6 in the third quarter.

Xavier 64,

Waupaca 32

WAUPACA – The Comets put up a big number in the season opener with the Hawks.

Unfortunately for Waupaca, that number was 45, as in 45 turnovers.

“Their pressure got to us,” coach Brandon Temperly said. “It’s what made them go. We handled it better in the second half, but we have to get use to handling it because we’re going to see it night in and night out.”

Xavier took a 13-3 lead into the second quarter and built a 30-14 halftime lead thanks in part to Anna Loken’s three-pointer at the buzzer.

The Comets outscored the Hawks 12-10 in the third quarter and Johnson’s three-pointer cut the lead to 40-27 early in the fourth quarter, but Xavier finished the game with a 24-3 run.

“Xavier’s a great team, but I know I have a better team than this,” Temperly said. “We did not play well today, but we’re going to have to work and get better. When we get things figured out, we’re going to give teams in this conference a run for their money. I look for this team to be very good as the season goes on.

“Xavier had the same amount of time we had, so there are really no excuses there,” he added. “We have to take this game and learn from it. We have to step forward from this, it can’t be a step back. Xavier put a pretty good one on us tonight, but we need to learn from this and get better each day.”

The Comets lost seniors Lexie Marringa, Abbey Lazers, Katie Barlow and Ashlie Hoffman from a team that made it to a Division 2 regional final last season.

“We had a great senior class that did a lot for our program,” Temperly said. “I’m looking forward to the seniors we have this year stepping up, just like seniors we’ve had in previous years. The good thing about this team is we have four girls with a lot of game experience, so it’s not like the cupboard’s empty. I have some juniors and a sophomore with a lot of talent, they just need some experience. They’re going to improve each game and keep working at it.

“This is definitely a group that’s going to get it done by committee,” he said. “I like the fact that I have four girls that could put up 20 points, but I don’t need all of them to put up 20. We can move the ball, get good shots and have a lot of opportunities. We have a chance to go 10 deep this year and we haven’t had that before.”
