Comets shut out Hodags

Waupaca’s boys’ hockey team bounced back from a one-goal loss to Antigo with a Great Northern Conference win over Rhinelander.

The Comets handed the Hodags a 2-0 defeat Jan. 31 at the Waupaca Expo Center one day after dropping a 3-2 decision to the Red Robins.

Waupaca 2, Rhinelander 0

WAUPACA – Austin Erickson and Zach Smith scored for the Comets in the first and third periods, respectively, while goalie Walker Smith stopped all 27 of Rhinelander’s shots on goal.

Brandon Bolen, Elliot Crisman and Frankie Ellingson picked up assists and the Comets had a 41-27 shot advantage.

Antigo 3, Waupaca 2

ANTIGO – Waupaca’s Jared Erickson and Antigo’s Alex Nagel scored in the first period; Nagel gave the Red Robins a 2-1 lead in the second period; Ellingson tied the game in the third period with an unassisted short-handed goal; and Antigo’s Joe Kubacki came up with the game-winning score on a power play goal with 5:20 to go in the game.

Smith and Ben Stone assisted on Erickson’s goal.

Antigo outshot Waupaca 40-19.

Waupaca played at Mosinee Feb. 4 and will open a three-game home stand at 7 tonight (Thursday, Feb. 6) against Ashwaubenon. Also on the schedule are home games at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, against Lakeland and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, against Stevens Point Pacelli.
