With the top five players back from last year, things are looking up for the Waupaca boys’ golf team.
“We’re looking for big things from this year’s team,” coach Tom Noltner said. “They have high expectations for themselves, they enjoy the game of golf and work hard at their game. This team has a lot of experience and should contend for a conference title if things work out. Shaun Plunkett, Max Hansen, Ben Stone, Logan Walters and Turner Kelly will start the year as the top five, but they will be pushed by Frankie Ellingson and Hunter Carrick.”
Plunkett and Walters are seniors, while Hansen, Stone and Kelly are juniors. The roster also includes seniors Brett Sievwright, Bret Nelson and Zach Smith; juniors Ellingson, Carrick and Alex Librande; sophomores Elliot Crisman and Ryan Pulvermacher; and freshmen Tegan Noltner, Isaac Wright and Alex Panzenhagen.
The Comets opened the season April 11 with an eighth-place finish at the 17-team Wautoma Invitational at the Waushara County Club in Wautoma.
Stone led the team with an 84 (40, 44), followed by Kelly, 89 (48, 41); Hansen, 96 (44, 52); Carrick, 97 (48, 49); Ellingson, 98 (49, 49); and Crisman, 119 (61, 58).
The Comets compete with Appleton Xavier, Berlin, Clintonville, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute, Ripon and Winneconne in the Eastern Valley Conference.
“As a team, we are working hard on our short game until we can get to a course to take some full swings,” Noltner said. “As a coach, I am looking forward to the season because the potential to do some great things as a team is there.”
