Freedom handles Waupaca

If Isaac Gonnering had his way, he’d play the Waupaca Comets every week.

The Freedom junior ran for 197 yards on 34 carries in a 43-6 win over the Comets Sept. 5 at Haberkorn Field.

The Irish scored on all but three of their possessions. Brett Schommer opened the scoring with a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter; Collin Hofacker caught a 46-yard TD pass fro Andy Conley; and Gonnering scored from 6 and 9 yards out to give Freedom a 23-0 halftime lead.

Conley and Hofacker hooked up for the second time, this time on a 30-yarder, in the third quarter. Waupaca’s Joe Ogden scored from a yard out, but the Comets still trailed 30-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

Gonnering found the end zone from 15 yards out in the final period and Schommer scored on a 7-yard run to cap the scoring.
Freedom outgained Waupaca 389-187, including 261-46 on the ground.

Waupaca fell to 2-1 on the season and 2-1 in Eastern Valley Conference play with the loss, while the Irish improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference games.

Waupaca will head to Winneconne at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12.
