Mary E. Roloff, age 93, New London, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at The Bridges of Appleton.
She was born on September 18, 1922, in New London, daughter of the late William and Mary (Morgan) Backes. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Roloff on November 23, 1942. Mary’s first love was education. She taught elementary school for over 50 years. She started her career at Lone Pine School in Lebanon in 1941 and throughout her career taught at various schools in the New London and Manawa districts. Mary’s other passions in life included golfing, swimming, dancing, playing cards and socializing with family and friends. Her special relationship with her grandchildren will be fondly remembered.
Mary is survived by a daughter, Rita (Marty) O’Brien, Appleton; sons, Robert Roloff (special friend, Glori), Royalton; Rodney (Sharyn) Roloff, Pleasanton, CA; brothers, Cyril (Mary Lou) Backes, Green Bay and Ronald (Mildred) Backes, Chula Vista, CA; a sister, Rita Dennison, De Pere. She is further survived by nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Mary, three brothers: Garett, Morgan, Bernard Backes; and four sisters: Margaret Karuhn, Helen Smerling, Gert Wolf, and Evelyn Loughrin.
Funeral Mass for Mary will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, New London with Fr. Robert Karuhn officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the Royalton Cemetery.
