Waupaca Area blanks Raiders

Two players finish with hat tricks

After dropping a pair of nonconference games, the Waupaca Area girls’ hockey got back into the win column Jan. 25 with a 6-0 Great Northern Conference win over Medford at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center.

The team had fallen 2-1 to Arrowhead Jan. 22 and 6-1 the previous day to Fond du Lac/Waupun.

Waupaca Area 6, Medford 0
WAUPACA – Markie Ash and Avrey Simonson accounted for all six of Waupaca Area’s goals, as they each recorded a hat trick.

Both players found the net once in each period as Waupaca Area outshot the Raiders 27-10.

Ash added a pair of assists, while Simonson, Anna Ryder and Katarina Otter-Giese had one each.

Arrowhead 2, Waupaca Area 1
HARTLAND – Waupaca Area outshot Arrowhead 2-1, but the home team picked up the win.

Morgan Hobbs put Arrowhead on the board in the first period before Ash tied the game in the second off of Jamie Slattery’s assist.

Arrowhead’s Cameron Nowicki broke the 1-1 tie with a power play goal in the third period.

FDL/Waupun 6, Waupaca Area 1
WAUPACA – The Warbirds scored the game’s first four goals before Ash scored for Waupaca Area late in the second period, with Slattery getting credit for the assist.

Drew Deanovich and Callie Tighe scored twice for the Warbirds.

Waupaca Area hosted Appleton United Jan. 26 and will return to Great Northern play at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, against Northland Pines at the Expo.
