Despite a 59-47 loss to Green Bay East on Friday, Feb. 19, Bulldog boys’ basketball head coach Kurt Schommer felt his team played one of its best games of the season.

“I was proud of the way we fought the entire game, especially on the defensive side,” said Schommer. “We forced Green Bay East into some turnovers that led to some easier buckets for us.”

The outsized Bulldogs led in the first half and fought the Red Devils off for the halftime lead 25-24.

Green Bay inched back in the second half to gain the lead.

“Our main issue was going 7-21 from the free throw line and missing about five lay-ups,” said Schommer. “I believe we truly deserved this game, but just couldn’t pull through in those two phases of the game. Green Bay played hard the whole game and they are a good basketball team.”

Schommer said they’re excited in the direction they’re going.

“We’re going to finish the season up strong and enter the playoffs playing good basketball,” said Schommer.

Seymour 67, New London 50
Coach Schommer described a Bay Conference loss to Seymour on Tuesday, Feb. 16 as a game that went well at times.

“When our defense was active and communicating, we managed to slow down their offense a little bit,” Schommer said. “We gave up way too many second-chance opportunities in the first half that led to a 13-point halftime deficit.”

The Thunder led 38-25 at the half. Schommer said the Bulldogs improved in the second half but couldn’t get closer to Seymour than 10 points under.

“We have to give Seymour a lot of credit. They played good defense and have some very nice talent that we couldn’t hold in check,” Schommer said. “They are a tough team that have a good record for a reason.”

Seymour was tied with Xavier for first in the Bay Conference.

Scoring: Devin Winkler 12, Kyle Wolf 12, Will Wohlt 10, Jacob Johnson 8, Brayden Kurth 6, Hunter Zaddack 2. Leading three-pointers: Wohlt 5, Winkler 4.

Games ahead
The Bulldog boys will conclude their regular season play at home Thursday, Feb. 25 against Shawano. The boys’ team will travel to Shawano on Tuesday, March 1, for the first round of regional play.
