Ash heading to state

Senior finishes second at sectional

By Greg Seubert

Four strokes.

That’s what kept the Waupaca girls’ golf team from making its first trip to state in program history.

While the Comets did not move on as a team, the season is still alive for senior Markie Ash.

The Comets placed third Oct. 3 at a WIAA Division 1 sectional that Green Bay Notre Dame hosted at Thornberry Creek at Oneida.

Bay Port and Green Bay Preble/East/Southwest/West qualified for the state meet with scores of 369 and 381, respectively.

Waupaca finished third at 384 followed by Notre Dame (392), Shawano (399), De Pere (400), Appleton East (408) and Pulaski (411).

The top two teams advance to the state meet, to be held Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 9-10, at Verona’s University Ridge Golf Course.

Ash will wrap up her high school golf career with her first trip to state.

She turned in a round of 82, good enough for second place behind medalist Jo Baranczyk, who shot a 76. Shawano’s Brianna Zook and Notre Dame’s Emily Conard also qualified as individuals with rounds of 90 and 91, respectively.

Other scores for Waupaca were Cadie Ash (96), Sydney Behm (100), Lylli Sondrol (106) and Alana Radley (115).
