Library to screen Bogart classic

Waupaca’s winter-spring movie schedule

The Waupaca Area Public Library will screen “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, as the first entry of 2018 in its First Thursday Film Series.

Directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston and Tim Holt, this 1948 movie tells the tale of three down-and-out American drifters who leave the safety of the Mexican city of Tampico to seek a fortune in gold in the dangerous bandit country of the Sierra Madre Mountains.

The film follows the adventures and changing personalities of the men as greed overtakes their fragile bond of friendship and as their very survival becomes questionable.

Dr. Jack Rhodes will introduce the film. Free popcorn, sodas and theater treats will be provided. No reservations are necessary, and no admission fee is charged.

For more information, call the library at 715-258-4414.

Subsequent films in this series, all on the first Thursday of each month at 1:30 p.m., are as follows:

February: “Rebecca” (Paramount, 1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

March: “Gosford Park” (IFC, 2001), directed by Robert Altman.

April: “Father of the Bride” (MGM, 1950), directed by Vincent Minnelli.

May: “Friendly Persuasion” (Allied Artists, 1957), directed by William Wyler.
