Manawa has no turnovers against Auburndale

By Holly Neumann

The Manawa Wolves took on the Auburndale Apaches, beating them 34-22 at home in a non-conference matchup Friday, Aug. 24.

Auburndale was first on the board, when the Apaches blocked a punt by Manawa’s Mason Wiesner causing the ball to go out of the back of the end zone for a safety, putting them up 2-0.

The Apaches scored for the second time on a run by Trayton Weister. With the point after touchdown failing, Auburndale had a 8-0 lead in the game.

When Manawa finally moved within striking distance, they turned the ball over on downs due to a failed passing attempt.

The final score of the half was a field goal kicked by Wiesner, leaving the score at 8-3 in Auburndale’s favor.

Manawa came out strong in the second half of the game, when Wiesner kicked another field goal and followed that up with an 84-yard run giving them a score of 13-8.

After a failed onside kick attempt by Manawa, Auburndale took possession of the ball, moved the ball up the field, and scored on a 2-yard run by Dylan Paun. Andrew Schertz kicked the extra point allowing Auburndale to regain the lead at 16-13.

The Wolves answered with a touchdown of their own on a 3-yard run by Daniel Beyer for the final score of the third quarter, giving the Wolves 20-16 lead in the game.

The scoring went back and forth during the fourth quarter.

First Seth Forbes found the end zone for the Wolves, followed by Auburndale’s Weister scoring for the Apaches and finally Wiesner scored for the Wolves once again to seal the victory with a score of 34-22.

“I think our guys did a great job of sticking together and trying to stay positive when things weren’t going our way,” said Head Coach Jeff Bortle. “We made some half-time adjustments that helped us be more successful running the ball. One of our goals is to not have any turnovers and we were able to do that tonight.”

The Wolves will begin conference play on Thursday, Aug. 30, when they travel to Bonduel.
