Falcons too much for Indians

Amherst notches win on the road

By Greg Seubert

Facing a defending state champion turned out to be too tall of an order for the Weyauwega-Fremont football team.

Amherst scored on its first four possessions in the first half and added three unanswered scores in the second half in a 48-8 win Sept. 14 in Weyauwega.

The Falcons found the end zone twice in the first quarter on Josh Rieck’s 45-yard run and a 5-yarder from Cyle Zblewski.

The Indians cut into the lead in the second quarter on Kolden Baehman’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Sawyer Hintz. The Indians were penalized 15 yards on the play for unsportsmanlike conduct, but Baehman connected with Tyler Wetzel for the two-point conversion to make it 14-8 with 8:05 to go in the first half.

Amherst answered with two more scores before halftime. Zblewski added to the Falcons’ lead with a 30-yard run and Lincoln Cullen added a 15-yard quarterback keeper to give the Falcons a 28-8 lead at the break.

The Falcons closed out the game with three scores in the third quarter. Eli Bentley scored on a 48-yard run, Cullen added a 50-yard run and Cullen tossed a 13-yard pass to Zach Toelle.

The Falcons outgained the Indians 236-81 on the ground and 84-59 through the air.

Neither team had a 100-yard rusher in the game. Cullen led the Falcons with 95 yards on only three carries, while Rieck added 92 yards on 15 attempts. Colton Reeck led the Indians with 52 yards on 11 carries.

The Indians fell to 0-3 in conference play and 0-5 overall, while Amherst improved to 3-0 in CWC-Large play and 4-1 overall. The Indians will face Pacelli at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at Goerke Field in Stevens Point, while Amherst will host Bonduel.

• In other games from Sept. 14 involving area teams, Freedom defeated Waupaca 17-14, Iola-Scandinavia topped Bonduel 47-12 and Manawa beat Shiocton 54-13.
