Suspect charged with theft

A woman out on bail was caught stealing food.

Ashli C. Sackette, 23, New London, is charged with felony bail jumping and misdemeanor theft.

On Nov. 1, New London Police Officer Jeremy Mulroy was dispatched to Festival Foods because a woman was suspected of stealing food.

When he arrived, Mulroy saw a blond woman running eastbound across the parking lot.

A store employee was standing in front of the entrance, waving him down and pointing at the running woman.

Mulroy pursued her in his squad car, stopped her in the parking lot near the movie theater and then arrested her.

The officer reported she appeared to have chocolate frosting on her face.

As Mulroy was handcuffing her, the woman said she stole the food because she was hungry.

An employee told police she saw the woman eat chocolate cookies and try to hide a sandwich and a bottle of vodka down her pants.

They said they tried to detain her, but she banged and kicked on the office door loud enough that the staff felt it was safer just to let her go, according to the criminal complaint.

The woman was identified as Sackette, who was released from custody on Aug. 6, after posting a $500 cash bond.

On Aug. 1, Sackette was charged with burglary, escape from criminal arrest and criminal damage to property.
