Steiger family benefit planned

Event to be held Feb. 2 in Manawa

By Holly Neumann

The John and Kim Steiger family benefit will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Cedar Springs Golf Course, E7005 Cedar Springs Road, Manawa.

The family lost everything in a house fire last October.

“John had noticed smoke in the basement. He went upstairs to check to see what was happening and as soon as he came up the basement stairs, he saw the glow of the fire,” said Stephanie Steiger. “He rushed outside to try to get the hose to put out the fire but was unsuccessful. He ran around the house to wake Kim who was sleeping.”

Kim was able to call the fire department just before the phone went dead.

Both suffered burns, with John’s to his face and neck and Kim’s to her forearm, while trying to put the fire out.

The home was completely engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, and the couple left with only the clothes on their backs.

“They would help anyone who needs it at any moment in time,” Stephanie Steiger said. “They are honest hard-working people who are having a rough patch in their life right now.”

The couple has lived in the Manawa and surrounding area for 35 years and now needs help from the community.

During the benefit, there will be 50/50 raffles, face painting, a bake sale, basket raffles and more.

“We have a lot of baskets people can put in for, from gift cards, scenic flights, homemade quilts, free house cleaning, gift certificates for the Harley shop in Appleton and many more,” she said.

Winners do not need to be present.

Hollywood Entertainment will provide music, and the Manawa Fire Department will be teaching about fire safety.

The benefit is open to the public.
