The Wisconsin Newspaper Association recognized the Waupaca County Post at the 2018 Better Newspaper Contest.

Sports editor Greg Seubert received a first-place award in the Weekly Division for three of his outdoors stories that ran in 2017 and 2018, while the Post also received honorable mention in Division E for best front page.

The WNA handed out the awards March 7 during the association’s annual convention and trade show in Madison.

Seubert’s stories included “‘Fonzie’ finds his happy days on a trout stream,” about actor Henry Winkler’s longtime obsession with fly-fishing; “This hike’s for the birds,” about a hike in Hartman Creek State Park; and “Hunters set sights on season,” about how the Chain O’ Lakes and Iola conservation clubs helped hunters get their guns ready for an upcoming deer hunting season.

“Did a fine job of keeping the reader engaged without sinking into jargon,” the judges wrote.

Editor Robert Cloud, reporter Angie Landsverk, graphic artist Cody Popp and Seubert received the best front page award.

“Great clean, consistent layout,” the judges wrote.

Members of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association judged the contest, which included 2,799 entries from 121 newspapers.
