Historian presents ‘From Cottages to Commandants”

“From Cottages to Commandants: The History of the Wisconsin Veterans Home” will be presented at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the Holly History and Genealogy Center in Waupaca.

Michael Telzrow, director of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison, will present the program.

In August 1888, the Wisconsin Veterans Home was dedicated along the shores of Rainbow Lake.

The home, the first in the country to allow veterans to live alongside their spouses in the same facility, was known for its quaint cottages and beautiful views of the Chain O’Lakes.

Over the next 100 years, the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King would add many buildings, including larger residence halls, and become one of three state-run institutions for veterans in Wisconsin.

Jack and Glenda Rhodes and Charles Larson sponsored the program and refreshments.

The Holly Center is located at 321 S. Main St., in Waupaca.
