Cigarette, oxygen lead to fire in New London

A cigarette sparked a fire at a New London home on Monday, June 17.

New London Fire Department was called to 412 W. Law St. shortly before 7:30 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to smoke throughout the house and quickly extinguished the fire in a first-floor bedroom, New London Fire Lt. Jake Dishno stated in a news release.

The home occupants prevented spread of the fire by closing the bedroom door on their way out the house, according to Dishno.

Dishno stated the investigation revealed an occupant in the bedroom had dropped a cigarette next to the bed. The fire then spread to their oxygen tank.

Nobody was injured. The home sustained “[l]ight to moderate smoke damage,” according to Dishno.

Crews were on scene for just under two hours.

Gold Cross Ambulance also responded to the fire.

Nine days earlier on June 8, a fire destroyed a duplex at 200 W. Beacon Ave. after an occupant dropped a cigarette butt into a flower pot, according to NLFD.
