WPR host returns to Winchester

Jonathan Overby

Dr. Jonathan Overby will present “We Rise Together: The Journey to Embrace Others as Equals” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waupaca.

This is the second program in the Winchester Academy of Waupaca All-Stars series, which invites previous speakers back to Waupaca due to popular demand.

Overby is the host of the Saturday evening world music program “The Road to Higher Ground with Jonathon Overby” on Wisconsin Public Radio.

Overby’s program features culturally and gender-inclusive blends of various styles of music as a means of increasing understanding of diverse groups worldwide.

In addition to his WPR duties, Overby is an ethnomusicologist, lyric baritone, clinician, conference presenter and lecturer.

Overby’s travels and research explore world music traditions around the globe with the goal of learning if “increased understanding of various sacred, spiritual, and communal rituals has the potential for reducing human hatred.”

Overby is executive producer of Wisconsin’s annual tribute to Dr. King and is the founding director of Africasong Communications.

He is a former member of the faculty at Edgewood College in Madison, where he completed his post-doctoral fellowship in 2018.

In 2016 he received the Wisconsin Ideas Award for his “exceptional teaching, outreach, public service, and collaborations in Wisconsin, the nation and the world.”

In February 2019 Overby joined other researchers from around the world as a featured panelist at the Folk Alliance International Conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

This program is free and open to the public.

Cookies and coffee are served at 6 p.m. and the program begins promptly at 6:30.

Winchester Academy expenses are funded through sponsors and tax-deductible donations.

Overby’s All-Star program is sponsored by Farmers State Bank.
