BABA Roundup

Nineteen strikeouts helped the Waupaca Lakemen stay unbeaten in BABA South-Central Division play.

Cam Seidl struck out 14 New London batters over five innings and reliever Jim Nighbor added five more over the final four innings as the Lakemen handed the Brews a 5-0 defeat July 7 at Lakemen Field.

Waupaca improved to 7-0 in the South-Central and 13-3 overall.

Seidl and Nighbor’s 19 strikeouts came close to setting a new team record. Former pitcher John Holly struck out 21 batters twice in his career and also fanned 19 batters twice. All four of those games took place between 1971-74.

Johnny Popham had two of Waupaca’s nine hits, while Andy Brooker had two of the Brews’ three hits.

Ethan Dayton opened the scoring in the second with a sacrifice fly. The Lakemen added two more runs in the third on Travis Holat’s sacrifice fly and Wes Austin’s single.

Waupaca wrapped up the scoring in the sixth on Josh Peterson’s RBI double and Walker Smith’s run-scoring groundout.

The game was the first of two rescheduled division games for the Lakemen. The other will be played 8 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at Ellison Field in Scandinavia as Waupaca faces the Vikings for the second time this season.

Waupaca’s upcoming schedule includes a six-team tournament in Bonduel July 9-12; a South-Central home game against Green Lake at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 14; a game at Little Chute at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 17; and the rescheduled game in Scandinavia the following day.

The Old-Timers’ Game, held every two years, will be played at noon Sunday, July 21, before the Lakemen host Weymont at 1:30 p.m.

Waupaca’s BABA Grand Championship teams from 1959, 1978 and 1979 will be recognized.

The team’s annual Fan Appreciation Night is scheduled for Wednesday, July 24, as the Lakemen will host Little Falls at 7:30 p.m.

The 20 winning tickets of the annual Jackpot Raffle will be drawn Friday, July 26, after Waupaca’s game with Appleton. Cash prizes range from $25 to $500 and only 300 tickets are available. Tickets are selling fast and there likely will be none available the night of the drawing. Tickets are available from players or at the concession stand during home games.

Other upcoming games include a home game Sunday, July 29, against Green Lake; a game Wednesday, July 31, at Hortonville; and a return trip to Scandinavia Sunday, Aug. 4, for the regular-season finale at 1:30 p.m.
