Phillip Tubbs will become Weyauwega-Fremont’s next district administrator on Aug. 1.

The W-F School Board voted unanimously to hire him for the position when it met on Monday, July 8.

All members were present.

“He’s familiar with this area. He has energy,” said Board President Kurt Duxbury.

For the past eight years, Tubbs has been the middle school principal in the Tomorrow River School District.

He was also an assistant principal and a dean of students prior to that.

Duxbury said Tubbs is focused on using data to make constant improvements.

Board member Mark Alberts also commented on his energy.

“I love his enthusiasm that he brings,” he said.

Tubbs graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in education.

In 2008, he received a master’s degree in education from Keene State College.

Tubbs earned his superintendent certification from Viterbo University in 2017.

Sorting through 21 applications

He was one of 21 people who applied for W-F’s district administrator position.

The board chose four people to interview.

It interviewed two on July 1 and two on July 2.

“They were all capable people,” Duxbury said.

The position became vacant on July 1.

Scott Bleck began his new job duties that day as superintendent of the New London School District.

He resigned as W-F’s district administrator on June 3.

A week later, the board set the timeline for filling the position.

The application deadline was midnight on June 19.

The board held a special meeting on June 20, to review the applications.

It chose four candidates that night.

The other three people interviewed were David Alexander, Benjamin Rayome and Jeff Rykal.

Alexander is district administrator for the Yorkville Joint #2 School District in Union Grove.

Rayome is district administrator for the Tigerton School District and a former Waupaca Middle School principal.

Rykal is the pre-K through 12th-grade principal in the Almond-Bancroft School District.

“Good people wanted to be here,” said Drew Niehans, the district’s business manager.

He said the quality of the candidates is a testament to how well the board is running the district.

Duxbury is proud of the board members and the work they did reviewing the applicants.

“It was a huge time commitment,” he said. “Everyone did an outstanding job.”
