More than 30 damaged in Mukwa

A wave of vandalism hit the town of Mukwa during the evening and early morning hours of Aug. 14-15.

According to a report filed on the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page, about 35 residences suffered damage to their mailboxes and newspaper boxes.

The report stated dispatch received “a report of a suspicious vehicle that was smashing mailboxes in the Cut-Off Road (south of New London).”

The report described the vehicle as a silver sedan, adding, “There is potentially more than one suspect.”

Brian Hatfield, E8706 Seefeld Road, was one of the people impacted.

Except, Hatfield’s incident took on a strange twist.

Hatfield said he walked outside to get his mail on Aug. 15 when, “I realized, this is not my mailbox.”

In place of Hatfield’s mailbox was instead the battered mailbox from E86703 Seefeld Road. Another residence’s mailbox, this one without any postal identification, rested next to it. None of these mailboxes belonged to Hatfield.

Hatfield said he could not tell what was used to destroy the mailboxes. Several mailboxes observed by Press Star staff on Aug. 16 had large dents and gashes in them.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department at 1-800-258-9955.
