Golfers advance to sectional

Waupaca, Hortonville move on

Two area teams advanced to the second round of the WIAA state girls’ golf tournament.

Hortonville and Waupaca placed second and fourth, respectively, Oct. 4 at a Division 1 regional meet at Luxemburg’s Northbrook Country Club.

Both teams will compete Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Notre Dame Sectional Oct. 8 at Thornberry Creek at Oneida and will need a top-four finish to advance to the state meet, set for Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 14-15 at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison. The top four golfers not on a qualifying team will also advance to state.

De Pere won the regional competition with a 373, followed by Hortonville (388), Appleton North (403), Waupaca (434), Luxemburg-Casco (436), Ashwaubenon (440), West De Pere (447), Appleton West (465) and Fox Valley Lutheran (486). De Pere’s Jolie Guyette had the lowest round of the day, an 84.

Four individual golfers also advanced to the sectional: Luxemburg-Casco’s Lydia VandenHouten; Ashwaubenon’s Rylie Severson and Sadie Schmitt; and West De Pere’s Alyssa Cayer.

Hortonville placed three golfers in the top 10. Ava Downie led Hortonville by placing fourth overall with a round of 91 that included nine-hole scores of 45 and 46. Hortonville’s other scores included Alix Kundinger, seventh, 95 (47, 48); Kate Downie, ninth, 97 (48, 49); Emily Schmidt, 15th, 105 (54, 51); and Reagan Sturn, tied for 23rd, 112 (53, 59).

Lylli Sondrol turned in Waupaca’s low round of 99 (50, 49) to tie for 11th, while Cadie Ash placed two shots back with a 101 (50, 51) to place 13th. Waupaca’s other scores included Kya Hume, tied for 25th, 114 (54, 50); Leota Studzinski, tied for 32nd, 120 (59, 61); and Emmy Nickel, 43rd, 135 (66, 69).
