Work release inmate goes missing

Suspect back in custody one day after warrant issued

Misael Bazan, 26, New London, is charged with felony escape.

Judge Troy Nielsen issued a warrant for his arrest on Thursday, Oct. 10.

By Friday, Oct. 11, Bazan was back in custody.

On June 7, Bazan was convicted of battery and disorderly conduct as acts of domestic abuse, and obstructing an officer.

A felony charge of strangulation was dismissed but read into the record.

According to the 2018 criminal complaint, Bazan punched a woman in the face on Thanksgiving Day in New London and tried to choke her.

At sentencing, Nielsen imposed then stayed nine months in jail and placed Bazan on two years of probation.

As conditions of Bazan’s probation, Nielsen sentenced him to 180 days in jail, then stayed 90 days to be used at the probation agent’s discretion.

Bazan was granted work release privileges and required to wear a GPS monitoring bracelet.

At 6 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, Waupaca County Jail Sgt. Jessica Friday received an alert that Bazan had removed his monitoring bracelet.

According to the 2019 criminal complaint, Friday made numerous attempts to call Bazan. She left messages, but he did not return her calls.

The GPS on his bracelet showed Bazan’s last location was at his apartment in New London.

At 7 p.m. Sept. 5, Deputy Adam Lange went to Bazan’s apartment, but nobody answered the door.

At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 6, Bazan failed to arrive to the jail for his weekly breathalyzer test.

His monitoring bracelet was no longer tracking Bazan because its battery had died.
