Waupaca to host soccer sectional

Comets, Polar Bears get No. 1 seed

By Greg Seubert

Two area teams have received a No. 1 seed for the upcoming WIAA state boys’ soccer tournament.

Waupaca and Hortonville received a top seed in divisions 2 and 3, respectively.

Waupaca will face No. 8 Rhinelander or No. 9 Lakeland at 7 p.m. Thursday. Rhinelander and Lakeland will play Oct. 22 in Rhinelander.

A No. 1 seed means the Comets will have home field advantage throughout the tournament. If Waupaca makes it to a sectional final, the Comets will host that game at 7 p.m. Nov. 2.

Hortonville will host eighth-seeded Green Bay West at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22. The winner will play No. 4 Marshfield or No. 5 Green Bay Southwest for a regional championship Saturday, Oct. 26. The Polar Bears are in the New Richmond Sectional and the sectional final is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, in New Richmond.

New London and Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia will also compete in Division 3 in the Waupaca Sectional, while Clintonville is an eighth-seeded team in the Division 4 Kohler Sectional.

New London is a No. 6 seed and will head to Appleton to face third-seeded Fox Valley Lutheran at 4 p.m. Oct. 24. Seventh-seeded Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia will host 10th-seeded Antigo at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 in Amherst.

Clintonville will open the tournament at 4 p.m. Oct. 24 at home against ninth-seeded St. Lawrence Seminary.

Sectional championships in all four divisions will advance the WIAA Boys’ State Soccer Championships, set for Thursday to Saturday, Nov. 7-9 at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
