Teams team up to fight cancer

Fight Cancer Night held in Iola

By Holly Neumann

Iola-Scandinavia and Rosholt’s volleyball teams met on the court Oct. 17 for the 11th time to show their support for community members battling cancer. The Thunderbirds won three of the Fight Cancer Night match’s five games (20-25, 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 15-5).

Cancer survivors and fighters walked an honorary lap around the Iola-Scandinavia High School gym while the song “We’re All in This Together” played.

Iola-Scandinavia senior Mackenzie Kielblock, whose grandmother passed away from breast cancer, spoke about the importance of the night.

“This is a super-important night,” she said. “I look forward to it every year. I do this for my grandma and every person that is fighting in the community. It brings everyone together.”

One of those survivors is Lynn Myers, who battled cancer for five years.

“This touches my heart,” she said.

She recalled being diagnosed with cancer in 2013.

“One day, there was a knock on my door and it was the volleyball team,” Myers said. “They had a gas card for me.”

At the time, Myers was traveling to Green Bay for treatments.

“That money meant a lot to me,” she said. “It helped us to have a few less worries.”

Myers is currently cancer-free and believes in events like Fight Cancer Night.

“You still worry,” she said. “I hope everyone get better.”

Myers thanked everyone who attended the event.

“Not only have a lot of people donated raffle times, but a lot of people have opened their wallets to buy raffle tickets,” she said. “They will be able to touch a lot of lives with all that they have done here.”
