Polar Bears win first playoff

Hortonville tops De Pere at home

By Greg Seubert

A healthy does of Chase Hughes turned out to be just what the Hortonville Polar Bears needed in the first round of the WIAA football playoffs.

The junior running back scored four of his team’s six touchdowns Oct. 25 in a 41-6 win over De Pere in a matchup of Division 2 teams at Wolf River Community Bank Stadium.

Hughes’ touchdown runs of 3, 20, 24 and 13 yards on four consecutive drives helped the Polar Bears build a 35-0 halftime lead over the Redbirds.

Kyle Allen also connected with Parker Lawrence for a 6-yard touchdown pass with less than a minute to go in the first half and Jayqon Owens returned the second half kickoff 85 yards for the Polar Bears’ final score.

De Pere avoided the shutout with Adam Timbrook’s 53-yard touchdown run with just over five minutes to go in the game.

Hortonville, a No. 2 seed in Division 2, improved to 9-1 with the win and will host third-seeded Kaukauna at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in Level 2. Kaukauna advanced to the next round with a 27-13 win over Green Bay Southwest.

The Polar Bears defeated the Ghosts 27-10 during the regular season.
