Waupaca, Hortonville to play Oct. 31
By Greg Seubert
Two more wins.
That’s all that stands between Waupaca and Hortonville’s boys’ soccer teams and their first-ever trips to state.
Both teams win a WIAA regional championship Oct. 26 by shutting out their opponents. Waupaca handed Shawano a 6-0 loss in Division 3, while Hortonville blanked Marshfield 2-0 in a matchup of Division 2 teams.
Both teams are No. 1 seeds in the state tournament and will host sectional semifinals Thursday, Oct. 31. Waupaca will host third-seeded Fox Valley Lutheran at 4 p.m., while the Polar Bears will host No. 2 Pulaski at 7 p.m.
Waupaca 6, Shawano 0
Bryce Boldt scored all three of the Comets’ goals in the first half and his fourth gave Waupaca a 4-0 lead early in the second half.
Keenin Polebitski added a pair of unassisted goals in the second half and also assisted on three of Boldt’s goals.
Waupaca goalkeeper Dillan Russell stopped all five of Shawano’s shots.
Waupaca will also host a sectional final Saturday, Nov. 2. If the Comets defeat Fox Valley Lutheran in the semifinal, they would face Rice Lake or Unity/St. Croix Falls in the final, scheduled for 7 p.m.
Hortonville 2, Marshfield 0
A pair of first-half goals from Kaden Bonikowske and Chase Coughlin were all the Polar Bears needed to defeat the Tigers.
Ian Hoyer assisted on both goals and goalkeeper Luke Petrasko had six saves.
If Hortonville wins its semifinal matchup with Pulaski, the Polar Bears will head to New Richmond to face top-seeded Onalaska or No. 2 New Richmond at 1 p.m. Nov. 2 in a sectional final.
