Comets, Polar Bears stay alive

 

Soccer teams advance to final

Two area boys’ soccer teams are still in the hunt for a trip to state.

Waupaca and Hortonville won their WIAA sectional semifinal games Oct. 31 and will now play in a sectional final Saturday, Nov. 2.

The Comets and Polar Bears earned a No. 1 seed in divisions 3 and 2, respectively. Waupaca handed third-seeded Fox Valley Lutheran a 2-0 loss, while Hortonville advanced in Division 2 with a shootout win over second-seeded Pulaski.

Waupaca 2, Fox Valley Lutheran 0

Keenan Polebitski opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the fifth minute and Aidan Charapata gave the Comets a 2-0 lead in the 13th minute off of an assist from Zachary Wanty.

Both teams had six shots on goal.

Waupaca will host Rice Lake at 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at Comet Field. Rice Lake advanced with a 2-1 overtime win over Unity/St. Croix Falls.

Hortonville 2, Pulaski 2 (Hortonville 8-7 in shootout)

The Polar Bears outshot the Red Raiders 8-7 in a shootout after both teams scored twice during regulation and two overtime periods.

All four of the game’s goals came during the second half. Pulaski took a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals from Brett Marbes, but the Polar Bears tied the game on goals from Dillon Biese and Ian Hoyer off of assists from Kaden Bonikowske and Travis Schmitz.

Hortonville then outshot the Red Raiders 8-7 in a shootout.

The Polar Bears will head to New Richmond to face New Richmond at 1 p.m. Nov. 2. New Richmond advanced with a 1-0 win over Onalaska.
