Waupaca wins season-opening dual

Two area wrestlers headed to Antigo High School Dec. 7 for the John Roberts Scramble and returned home with an individual championship.

Waupaca’s Colby Bernhardt won the 138-pound championship while Clintonville/Marion’s Caden Young placed first at 145.

Waupaca also opened the season Dec. 5 under first-year coach Mike Kositzke with a North Eastern Conference dual win over Clintonville/Marion.

Ashland won the 16-team tournament with 267 points, followed by Athens (252.5), Shiocton (245), Lakeland/Mercer (236.5), Antigo (214), Crivitz (187), Waupaca (183.5), Cameron (179), Manawa (171.5), Rosholt (159), Hayward/Northwood 125, Marathon (122.5), Menominee Indian (96), Three Lakes/Phelps (81.5), Clintonville/Marion (64), Elcho (51.5).

Other wrestlers placing for Waupaca included John Schmidt (second, 126); Kaleb Mannel (fourth, 120); Ronald Mason (fifth, 170); Cory Gebel (sixth, 195); Benji Pacheco (eighth, 152); Ben Habighorst (10th, 132); Zach Mallo (12th, 170); Devin Eisentraut (13th, 160); and Damien Pomerenke (16th, 152).

Colten Klemm led Manawa by placing second at 120. Also placing for the Wolves were Andrew Elmhorst (third, 220); Bryan Griffin (fourth, 160); Colin Moser (fourth, 170); Corey Beyer (fifth, 182); Gavin Linjer (sixth, 145); and Bryce Bartel (seventh, 160).

Hunter Allender placed 11th for Clintonville/Marion at 145.

Sgt. Nick Mueller Memorial Tournament

Weyauwega-Fremont placed fourth Dec. 7 at the 11-team tournament in Little Chute.

The Indians’ Carter Greening and Ben Strehlow won championships at 126 and 182, respectively.

Greening pinned Lena’s Sam Marquardt in 53 seconds, Wrightstown’s Jaeger Pavlik in 3:08 and Omro’s Kaden Besaw in 1:15.

Strehlow pinned Tri-County’s Nate Severin in 50 seconds, picked up an 11-9 win over New Holstein’s Mike Volz and wrapped up his championship with a 6-2 win over Wrightstown’s Mason Rice.

Brock Sanger placed second for Weyauwega-Fremont at 195, while Mason Marquette finished third at 145 and Clayton Fee and Skylor Maynard placed fourth at 106 and 220, respectively.

Wrightstown won the tournament with 201.5 points, followed by Xavier (161), Little Chute (103.5), Weyauwega-Fremont (101), New Holstein (95), Lena (82), Omro (79.5), Amherst (65), Freedom reserves (63), Tri-County (58) and Gillett (13).

Tom McGarvie Earlybird Scramble

New London placed 14th Dec. 7 at a tournament at Watertown High School.

Mineral Point won the invitational with 485 points, followed by D.C. Everest (395), Watertown (391), Winneconne (285), Two Rivers (334), Pewaukee (333), Whitewater (300), Horicon (282), Middleton (223), Verona (201), West Bend West (195), Waukesha North (169), Westosha Central (169), New London (168), Beloit Memorial (149), Clinton (73) and Ozaukee (70).

Wrestlers placing for New London include Lucas Gerrits (second, 138); Logan Heimbruch (third, 145); Damian Polanco (fourth, 106); De Evian Ross (fifth, 195); Ian Standerfer (seventh, 170); Keaten Pues (11th, 285); Keegan Morien (13th, 120); and Jacob Wohl (15th, 170).

Red Raider Duals

Hortonville posted a 2-1 record Dec. 7 in Pulaski.

The Polar Bears dropped a 32-24 decision to Pulaski in the first round, but rebounded with a 41-34 win over Freedom and a 39-36 victory over West De Pere.

Wyatt Skebba, Jacob Collar and Landon Thern won all three of their matches at 106, 152 and 160, respectively.

Waupaca 46, Clintonville/Marion 12

Five forfeits helped Waupaca open the season Dec. 5 with a win over the Truckers.

Thirty of the Comets’ points came on forfeits to Mannel (120), Schmidt (126), Mallo (170), Gebel (195) and Kai Badgley (285).

Waupaca forfeited the 182-pound match to Caleb Moore and the meet also included double forfeits at 106, 113, 138 and 220.

Bernhardt and Mason picked up pins for Waupaca. Bernhardt pinned Michael Michonski in 37 seconds at 145 and Mason pinned Beau Tuddenham in 4:15 at 160.

Waupaca’s other points came on Habighorst’s 16-6 major decision over Jetlyn Michonski at 132.

Clintonville/Marion’s other points came on Young’s pin of Pomerenke in 2:55 at 152.

Both teams have North Eastern dual meets set for Thursday, Dec. 12. Clintonville/Marion will head to Appleton to face Fox Valley Lutheran, while Waupaca will host Freedom. Junior varsity matches are scheduled for 6 p.m., with varsity matches to follow at 6:30 p.m.

Neenah 42, Hortonville 32

Hortonville opened its season Dec. 5 by dropping a 42-32 Fox Valley Association meet to Neenah on the Rockets’ home mat.

The Rockets opened the meet a pair of wins. Austin Lewis handed Austin Wasmund a 3-1 loss at 138 pounds and Drake Hayward pinned Kyler Brown in 1:07 at 145.

The Polar Bears answered with Collar’s 15-0 technical fall over Jenssey Fermin at 152 that cut the lead to 9-5.

Hortonville took its first lead on Neenah’s forfeit to Landon Thern at 160 and George Huza’s pin of Bryce Crook in 1:22 at 170 gave the Polar Bears a 17-9 lead.

The Rockets then scored 24 unanswered points on Davin Munoz’s pin of Ben Diedrich in 4:52 at 182, forfeits to Marshall Kools (195) and Caleb Letson (220) and Bryce Fochs’ pin of Joseph Degeneffe in 1:22 at 285.

Skebba picked up a 3-2 decision over Neenah’s Even Piechocki at 106, but Tyler Beauchamp beat Austin Spindler 10-8 at 113.

Neenah’s final six points came on Hortonville’s forfeit to Jayden Sheppard at 120.

The Polar Bears closed out the meet with pins at 126 at 132. Jesse Cleereman pinned Dante Caiani in 3:29 and Brayden Bellile pinned Ramon Manka Wigfall in 3:10.

The Polar Bears will return to FVA duals Dec. 12 by hosting Fond du Lac at 7 p.m.

Shiocton 36, Manawa 32

Manawa won four of its six contested matches with the Chiefs Dec. 5, but Shiocton picked up the Central Wisconsin Conference dual win on its home mat.

Manawa’s wins came on Bryce Bartel’s 11-1 major decision over Dion Helser (160), Corey Beyer’s 11-1 major decision over Caden Winter (182), Colten Klemm’s 7-2 decision over Jericho Helser (120) and Gavin Linjer’s 9-8 decision over Bradley Demerath (132).

Shiocton’s wins included Hunter Schuh’s 10-4 decision over Colin Moser (170) and Jared Jahnke’s 11-5 decision over Bryan Griffin (145).

Manawa forfeited matches to Gage Oskey (106), Colten Schuh (126), Dylan Herb (138), Davin Piechocki (152) and Jaden Dorn (195), while Shiocton forfeited to Kevin Klemm (113), Kaden Kaczorowski (220) and Andrew Elmhorst (285).

The Wolves will host Tri-County at 7 p.m. Dec. 12.

Wisconsin Dells 54, Wega-Fremont 24

Ten of the meet’s 14 matches Dec. 5 in Wisconsin Dells ended with a pin.

Weyauwega-Fremont’s pins came from Greening in 13 seconds over Dawson Kosterman (132), Strehlow in 2:29 over Matthew Getchen (182) and Sanger in 22 seconds over James Sampson (195).

The Chiefs forfeited the 106-pound match to Fee and Weyauwega-Fremont forfeited the 113- and 138-pound matches.

Wisconsin Dells’ pins came from Elizah Leonard in 5:59 over Danny Wilson (126), Gavin Kingsley in 4:46 over Marquette (145), Billy Detloff in 55 seconds over Ethan Lamoureux (152), Marty Koenig in 28 seconds over Caden Meisenhelder (160), Elijah Leonard in 3:59 over Max Meyerhofer (170), Lennon Streade in 1:41 over Maynard (220) and Aaron Huff in 1:11 over Cody Steinbach (285).

The Indians will open their CWC dual schedule at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 in Keshena against Menominee Indian.

Brillion 53, New London 21

Two pins gave New London an early 12-0 Dec. 3 in its season-opening dual meet with Brillion, but three late pins and a pair of forfeits helped the Lions pick up the win.

Pues opened the meet by pinning Emery Schuh in 29 seconds at 285 and Polanco added to the Bulldogs’ lead by pinning Trenton Nicklaus in 1:36 in the 106-pound match.

Mason Kloehn had New London’s other pin, as he took care of Mavric Nohr in 2:55 at 138. Heimbruch also picked up a win for New London with a 5-0 decision over Damon Schmidt at 152.

Heimbruch’s win over Schmidt cut Brillion’s lead to 23-21, but the Lions added 30 points in the final five matches.

Brillion’s late pins came from Garett Kilgas over Wohl in 1:39 (170), Colin Schuman over Jerrick Pues in 28 seconds (182) and Sam Galoff over Ross in 4:32 (195). The Bulldogs also forfeited matches to Carter Stebane (160) and Levi Galoff (220).

Brillion’s other wins included Cole Peters’ 8-2 decision over Morien (120), Cashton Miller’s 14-4 major decision over Austin Schmallenberg (126), Sean McConnell’s pin of Pablo Cosido in 2:38 (132) and Garnett Stebane’s 16-2 major decision over Gerrits (145). New London also forfeited the 113-pound match to Grant Geiger.

The Bulldogs will host Green Bay United at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 12.
