Road to state wrestling

Two area teams to host regional meet

The road to the state for high school wrestlers begins Saturday, Feb. 15.

Two area teams will host a WIAA regional meet that day, while four others will be on the road.

Here’s a rundown of regional meets involving area teams:

Division 1

• Kimberly Regional: Hortonville will join Appleton East, Appleton North, Appleton West, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Menasha and West De Pere at the meet, which starts at 10 a.m. at Kimberly High School.

Sectional qualifiers will advance to the Ashwaubenon Sectional Saturday, Feb. 22.

Division 2

• Waupaca Regional: Waupaca will host Lakeland/Mercer, Mosinee, Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards, Tomahawk, Waupaca/Wild Rose and Wittenberg-Birnamwood, with matches scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m.

• New London Regional: New London will host Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute, Winneconne, Wrightstown and Xavier, with matches to begin at 10:30 a.m.

• Oconto Falls Regional: Clintonville/Marion will join Antigo, Florence/Goodman/Niagara/Pembine, Marinette, Oconto Falls, Peshtigo and Seymour at Oconto Falls, with matches to start at 10 a.m.

Sectional qualifiers from all three regionals will head to a sectional meet in Oconto Falls Feb. 22.

Division 3

• Lena Regional: Manawa will join Bonduel, Gillett/Suring, Lena, Menominee Indian, Oconto and Shiocton at Lena High School, with matches set to get underway at 11 a.m.

• Auburndale Regional: Weyauwega-Fremont will head to Auburndale for a regional that will also include teams from Almond-Bancroft/Pacelli, Amherst, Auburndale, Pittsville, Rosholt and Tri-County. Matches will begin at 10 a.m.

Sectional qualifiers from both regionals will advance to the Bonduel Sectional, set for Feb. 22 at Shawano High School.

The WIAA State Individual Wrestling Championships will be held Thursday to Saturday, Feb. 27-29, at the Kohl Center in Madison.
