Two face felony charges

Pills found during traffic stop

Michael J. Howie, 49, Iola, and Angelina M. Schierland, 31, are charged with felony bail jumping and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, Waupaca Police Officer Matthew Batte was running stationary radar on Berlin Street when he observed a black Jeep with its tail lights off.

According to the criminal complaint, Batte noticed the driver and passenger moving around as he initiated a traffic stop.

Batte asked Howie, the driver, why he had been moving around.

Howie reportedly told the officer he had pills and pulled an old, unlabeled prescription bottle from his jacket pocket.

Inside the bottle were 4 1/2 white pills, identified as buprenorphine hydrochloride.

The medication is used for opiate dependence and requires a prescription.

Batte also reported finding a white, chunky powder under a towel on the front passenger’s seat.

A small, broken pill in a cellophane wrapper was found in Schierland’s purse, the complaint says.

At the time of his arrest, Howie was on a $2,000 signature bond due to Waupaca County charges of possession of cocaine.

Waupaca County released Howie on a $2,000 signature bond.

Schierland was released from custody in Winnebago County on Jan. 31 on a $1,000 signature bond on felony charges of possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.

She was released from custody in Portage County on Feb. 4 on a $5,000 signature bond on charges of receiving stolen property.

Waupaca County released Schierland on a $1,000 signature bond.
