Three teams advance

Iola-Scandinavia, Manawa, Clintonville win regionals

Iola-Scandinavia, Manawa and Clintonville have advanced to the second round of the WIAA state girls’ basketball tournament.

All three teams won regional quarterfinal games Feb. 25. Iola-Scandinavia ended Weyauwega-Fremont’s season by handing the Indians a 48-40 defeat and Manawa defeated Oconto 53-47 in Division 4, while Clintonville picked up a 68-10 over Tomahawk in Division 3.

Meanwhile, Waupaca saw its season end with a 62-49 loss to Ashland in Division 2.

Iola-Scandy 48, Wega-Fremont 40

The Thunderbirds led 23-13 at halftime behind eight points from Jaelyn Sivertson, who went on to lead the team with 18 points.

Weyauwega-Fremont outscored the T-Birds 27-25 in the second half.

Emilie Briquelet scored nine points for Iola-Scandinavia, while Marin Hoyord and Lilly Fuhs added six each.

Katie Bleck and Julia Rice led the Indians with 20 and 13 points, respectively.

The T-Birds, a No. 6 seed, will head to Fox Crossing to face third-seeded St. Mary Catholic at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28.

Manawa 53, Oconto 47

An 11-point halftime lead helped the eight-seeded Wolves defeat the ninth-seeded Blue Devils.

Manawa led 29-18 at the break before Oconto outscored the Wolves 29-24 in the second half.

Kaitlyn Miller led Manawa with 14 points and Jaden Jaeger added 13.

Oconto’s Jenna Hornblad led all scorers with 16 points.

The Wolves will travel to Bonduel Feb. 28 for a 7 p.m. matchup with top-seeded Bears.

Clintonville 68, Tomahawk 10

The sixth-seeded Truckers had no trouble knocking off the 11th-seeded Hatchets.

Clintonville led 43-9 at halftime and held the visitors to a single point in the second half.

Erin Viergutz and Selina Torrez led the Truckers with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Clintonville will head to Wittenberg Feb. 28 for a 7 p.m. contest with third-seeded Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Ashland 62, Waupaca 49

The Oredockers defeated the Comets behind 10 points from Ashlee and Abbi Moreland.

Ashland will now play top-seeded Hortonville at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 in a regional semifinal. The Polar Bears are a No. 1 seed and had a bye in the tournament’s first round.

Another area team, New London, also had a bye in the first round. The Bulldogs will host Shawano Feb. 28 in Division 2.

Winners of Feb. 28 games will play for a regional championship at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29.
