Winning games has not been a problem this season for the Hortonville girls’ basketball team.

Two more and the Polar Bears will head to state for the fourth straight year.

The Polar Bears opened WIAA state tournament play with home wins over Ashland and Mosinee and will now head to Antigo Thursday, March 5, to face Rhinelander in a Division 2 sectional semifinal. The winner of that game will then play New Richmond or Onalaska for a sectional championship at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Logan High School in La Crosse.

Hortonville 100, Mosinee 55

Mosinee stayed within striking distance throughout the first half and the opening minutes of the second half Feb. 28 in a regional final, but the Polar Bears used 9-0 and 19-0 runs to pull away.

Hortonville led 53-40 at halftime before holding the Indians to 15 points in the second half.

Macy McGlone scored 21 of her game-high 31 points in the second half for the Polar Bears, while Lexi Day added 20. Day and Aliyah Schmidt had four of Hortonville’s 12 three-pointers.

Paige Wicklund led Mosinee with 19 points.

Hortonville 88, Ashland 26

Ashland had opened the tournament Feb. 25 with a 62-49 win over Waupaca, but the Oredockers’ tournament run ended two days later on the Polar Bears’ home court.

Hortonville led 63-18 at halftime and held Ashland to eight points in the second half.

Day led the Polar Bears with 12 points, while Emma Lebeck added 11 and Morgan Jensema, McGlone and Kamy Peppler added 10 each.
