Funds support Waupaca, W-F student projects

In January, the Waupaca Rotary Club awarded grants totaling $1,300 to high school students from Waupaca and Weyauwega-Fremont.

A $300 was awarded to support the Destination Imagination project which seeks to “spread kindness and happiness throughout the schools and Waupaca community” through initiatives like painting positive messages in bathroom stalls at the middle school.

As stated in the students’ application: “If someone is having a rough day, we hope that we will see these positive messages and be in a better mood.”

A $1,000 grant was given to support a Forensic Water Testing program in the Weyauwega-Fremont School District. Each year, high school students work with middle school students to run water quality tests in the Waupaca River, among other projects.

Grant funds will be used to purchase testing equipment and supplies.

The awards were the first for Rotary’s new Youth Connections Grant program.

The grant committee, which includes two student representatives, awards grants of up to $1,000 to youth-led groups who have “projects that promote community enhancement, encourage healthy decisions for youth and families, and create opportunities for youth leadership.”
