Parks and Rec sponsors virtual challenge

By Angie Landsverk

The Waupaca Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a 19.6K challenge virtually.

“Anybody can do it. You don’t have to be in Waupaca,” said Kassandra Humke, the city’s recreation program supervisor.

The challenge is called “Stay Safe. Stay Fit.”

Parks and Recreation Director Andrew Whitman said, “We’ve seen a lot of virtual races around the area by different Parks and Rec and community groups. We wanted to pursue something like that.”

It involves completing 12 miles of an activity by June 14.

The name of the challenge incorporates COVID-19 and 6-foot social distancing, she said.

“That’s where that specific 19.6K comes from,” Humke said.

The cost of the challenge is $20 per person.

The proceeds from the event benefit ThedaCare’s COVID-19 Response Fund.

“We thought it would be a great way to give back and get families moving again,” said Whitman.

People may register at www.waupacaactive.net or by calling the Park and Rec office at 715-258-4435.

Registration began on May 26 and remains open through June 14, she said.

Participants can begin tracking their miles on Monday, June 1.

Once they complete 12 miles of activity, they submit their forms by June 14, to [email protected].

The goal is to complete the challenge in the two-week window.

“People can also do a workout and convert it to miles,” Humke said.

She said 15 minutes of exercise converts to about three-fourths of a mile.

Families with children may want to do some type of 30-minute workout per day together.

Those who complete the challenge earn a “Stay Safe. Stay Safe.” medal.

It features the name of the event and also a mask over the leaf that is part of Park and Rec’s logo.

Humke said medals will be shipped to those who live outside the area for an additional $7 charge.
