Stabbing outside Waupaca nightclub

Suspect held in custody on $50,000 cash bond

Prosecutors charged Guillerno Maren-Barrera, 30, Houston, Texas, with first-degree reckless endangerment.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7, Waupaca County Deputy Bryan Strobusch was dispatched to The Landing Strip, a nightclub located on East Gate Drive, just south of Waupaca.

A 911 caller reported that three men were fighting and a knife was involved.

When Strobusch arrived, he saw a group of people in the parking lot.

One of the men, identified in the criminal complaint as the victim, had a 1-inch stab wound on the left side of his abdomen.

Witnesses pointed out Maren-Barrera as the man who had pulled a knife during the altercation.

“The defendant did not immediately comply with my directives and I did draw my Taser and he eventually complied,” Strobusch reported, according to the criminal complaint.

Witnesses and surveillance video indicated that security staff escorted Maren-Barrera out of the nightclub into the parking lot.

A witness said he asked for Maren-Barrera’s keys because he believed he was the most sober.

Maren-Barrera allegedly became angry and pushed the witness.

Security staff then tried to separate the two.

The victim was also escorted out of the nightclub, the complaint says, and he also tried to keep the two men from fighting.

Maren-Barrera threw the witness to the ground. Then the victim pushed Maren-Barrera down.

When Maren-Barrera returned to his feet, he allegedly began swinging at the victim.

The victim backed away, Maren-Barrera pursued him, drew a serrated steak knife and stabbed him, the complaint says.

Eventually, security staff seized the knife from Maren-Barrera.

The victim was transported to ThedaCare Medical Center-Waupaca.

Waupaca County Judge Vicki Clussman set a $50,000 cash bond as a condition of Maren-Barrera’s release.
