Ribbon cutting celebrates new structure in Iola

Heralding in a new bridge with vintage cars is appropriate in Iola, home of the Iola Car Show.

The Main Street bridge demolished earlier this summer was built in 1939, so it lasted 80 years.

Iola Village President Joel Edler cut the ribbon for the new bridge Oct. 13.

A small parade of vintage cars owned by local residents, a Village of Iola truck and an Iola Car Show truck then cruised over the bridge.

First across was a 1964 Mercury Park Lane Marauder, owned and driven by Charlie Thompson of Scandinavia, with his wife Nola riding shotgun.

He saw a similar vehicle win a race in Milwaukee in 1964 and always wanted one. He purchased his in the early 1980s and has been enjoying it ever since.
