Input sought for new mascot name

Weyauwega-Fremont taking suggestions online

The Weyauwega-Fremont School District is beginning the process of choosing a new mascot name after retiring “Indians” as the high school’s name and mascot.

A form for offering suggestions is available on the district’s website and Facebook page.

Visit www.wegafremont.k12.wi.us and click on Mascot and Team Logo to submit a suggestion.

District Administrator Phillip Tubbs said it is open for suggestions until Monday Nov. 30.

The next part of the process begins after that.

“We will form a subcommittee to view the suggestions and narrow it down. Depending on the suggestions it could be as low as three or as high as 10. We will then send out another form to vote on the mascot names that were narrowed down. That information will go to the board and administration to make the final decision,” he told the Waupaca County Post.

The school board discussed the process on Nov. 9, during its Committee of the Whole meeting.

A few days later, the form for offering suggestions was posted on the district’s website and social media pages.

First and last names, as well as email addresses are required, as well as checking what describes them – current W-F student, W-F alumni, staff member, community member or non-resident.

Those giving suggestions for the new mascot name are also being asked to explain the reason why they suggested it, and how it relates to the school community.

Board retires old mascot

The school board voted unanimously last month to retire “Indians” as the high school’s name and mascot.

That action officially retired a name and image the high school had not been using for its mascot.

The district phased out used the word “Indians” on both athletic and band uniforms a number of years ago.

It began using a W-F swoosh instead.

Students would like to have a mascot.

Tubbs hopes the district has a new name by the end of June.

The district’s new fiscal year begins on July 1.

“Once we have the name, we will start to plan for the logo and mascot,” he said.

Board member Debi Bartel said it will be interesting to see how the new name is chosen.

After a name is chosen, a graphic designer could be brought in to talk to art classes about the process of designing a logo, she said.

Tubbs said the process will depend on what is chosen.

He said the district has not yet discussed or explored the funding or expenses for new uniforms.
